The Contemporary Pipe Organ: Compositional and Creative Practice

Since the turn of the century, the pipe organ has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity among contemporary composers, resulting in a spectrum of sound works that utilize the instrument in novel ways. In this book, I provide an overview of current approaches, identifying a selection of recent pipe organ works by twenty living individuals, and conducting interviews with them and discussing their work. These case studies encompass various performance formats, offering a snapshot of contemporary practice areas. Some presentations of the pipe organ are more familiar than others, but all engage with unique facets of instrument, and, taken together, paint a compelling picture of an innovative and vibrant artistic community.
